Alleys of Jdeide Quarter

AD1400年に城壁内（旧市街）の家・建物を徹底的に破壊したチムール（モンゴル）の圧政を恐れ、多くの住人たちはアレッポから地方に逃れたが、チムールの去った後戻ってきた人々のうちキリスト教徒たちが城壁の北側、現在の Al-Khandaq street と Al-Tilal street の間の地区に住居と教会を建設し、後期マムルーク時代にアレッポは再び繁栄を取り戻していった。

インド・ヨーロッパの東西交易に携わった人々が住んだ大邸宅が残っており、両側の高い住居の石壁に挟まれた細い石畳、所々にあるヴォールトのトンネルの路地は、アレッポで最も魅力的な景観を呈する地区となっている。

* Khandaq: 堀、溝(Arabic) を意味する。アレッポ城の堀に至る通り。
* Tilal: 丘(Arbic)を意味する。大被害をもたらした１８２２年の地震の後の瓦礫が集められ、その上にまた街が建設されたことに由来した地名。
